Division 2: We began our league campaign with a defeat away to Bornacoola on Sunday on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-08. It was a typical early season game littered with mistakes & dominated for long periods by the physically stronger home side. Bornacoola kicked a host of wides over the hour but we hung in the match and had chances to snatch something from the game. We trailed 0-02 to 0-01 after fifteen minutes with our sole point a lovely score from play from Danny Egan & it was great to see Danny back in action after missing most of last season through injury. We then had our best spell with 3 quick fire points from Martin Beirne, Declan Gilhooly & Danny again between the 21st & 24th minute. However the game’s key score arrived when Bornacoola found the net just before the break to leave the interval score 1-03 to 0-04. Bornacoola had the better possession again in the early stages of the second half scoring 2 points but wasting half a dozen good chances. We kept in touch with 2 points from Micky McManus & one from Brian Mulvey to cut the lead to 2 with 7 minutes remaining but we just couldn’t bridge the gap. A Declan Gilhooly free was our last score to leave it 1-08 to 0-08 at the finish. The team was: Kevin Nolan, Andrew Canning, Mark Gunning, Shane Beirne, Ciaran Mattynnsenns, Derek McGourty, Jason Loftus, Alan Wynne, Micky McManus, Thomas Mulvey, Brian Mulvey, Declan Gilhooly, Nathan Flynn, Martin Beirne, Danny Egan. Subs: David Wynne for N. Flynn, Alan McKeon for J. Loftus. We play Cloone at home on Sunday at 2pm.

Division 3: We have a home tie against St. Marys on Saturday at 4pm.

Minor League: The first competitive match of the year took place on Sunday in the park when St. Francis hosted Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins in the opening round of the league. We trailed 0-04 to 0-01 after 15 minutes with a Nathan Flynn free our only score. Ballinamore continued to dominate the half and despite points from John Crawford, Shane Walsh and a free & an effort from play from Nathan Flynn we trailed at the break by 0-08 to 0-05. However we did show positive signs in the opening period with a number of good moves but lacked a finishing touch. We went further behind 5 minutes into the second half but began to get a grip on the game after that and points from Nathan, Shane McLoughlin & Adrian Sorohan narrowed the gap to the minimum. Ballinamore responded with 2 pointed frees to lead again by 3 points with 55 minutes on the clock but our lads didn’t panic and Bryan Beirne & Nicholas Moore cut the deficit to one again and as the game entered injury time Shane Walsh struck the equaliser. We could have gone on to snatch victory but both teams were probably happy to share the points. The team was: Diarmuid McKiernan, Alan McTigue, Adrian Sorohan, Kyle Flynn, Padraig Clark, David Wynne, John Crawford, Brian Moran, Shane McLoughlin, Nathan Flynn, Bryan Beirne, Shane Walsh, Nicholas Moore, Niall Sorohan, Gerard Clark. Subs: Ciaran Walsh for Gerard Clark; Ryan Heron for Niall Sorohan, Luke Bradley, John Beirne,  Brian Gunning, Fergal McMorrow.  The next round is an away fixture in Carrigallen.

U-21 Champions: Congratulations to the St. Francis team & management who won the U-21 championship for the first time in 14 years with victory over Glencar Manorhamilton in Pairc Sean on Saturday last. We won a hard fought tense encounter on a scoreline of 1-04 to 0-03 played in difficult weather conditions. In contrast to the free flowing, high scoring semi final the previous weekend this was a different type of performance but no less notable with an excellent all round defensive display from the team. We played with the benefit of a strong breeze in the opening half but the game was scoreless until Martin Beirne struck with a fine point from play in the 25th minute. Manorhamilton had probably looked the better team in the opening period & created a number of goal chances with a combination of good goalkeeping from Jack Mattynnsenns & good fortune keeping them scoreless. On the stroke of half time Nicholas Moore kicked a great point under pressure to leave the interval score 0-02 to 0-00. The omens for the second half suggested that we would struggle but the team responded with an excellent performance of commitment, support play & hard work that made light of the conditions and they played some great football in the circumstances. A good move just after the break saw Brian Mulvey pulled down & Seamie McMorrow kicked the all important first score of the half from a placed ball. Then in the 34th minute came the crucial score when another good team move saw Seamie in on goal and he produced a clever finish to lob the Manor keeper and put us in control. It was the 45th minute before Manorhamilton opened their account with a free & they added a second point from play on 49 minutes to signal an exciting conclusion to the match. However another great passing move on 51 minutes saw Thomas Mulvey hit a great point from play into the teeth of the wind to give us a 5 point cushion again. Manorhamilton hit the last score of the game a point from play in the 57th minute and pushed hard to get an all important goal but we stood firm and emerged deserving winners on a scoreline of 1-04 to 0-03 with outstanding captain Thomas Cornyn lifting the cup. The team & scorers were: Jack Mattynnsenns, David Wynne, Mark Gunning, Barry Gilmartin, Jason Loftus, Ciaran Mattynnsenns, Thomas Cornyn, Philly McGourty, Martin Beirne (0-01), Shane Beirne, Thomas Mulvey (0-01), Seamie McMorrow (1-01), Nicholas Moore (0-01), Enda Maguire, Johnny McGourty. Subs: Brian Mulvey for J. McGourty, Adrian Sorohan for D. Wynne, Dylan McGowan for S. Beirne, Shane Beirne for Jason Loftus; Patrick McGrail, Danny Egan, Conor Tiernan, Nathan Flynn. Well done to managers Kevin Nolan & James Wynne for all their efforts with the lads over recent months.  The club would also like to sincerely thank Henry Sorohan who kindly sponsored a meal for the team and management afterwards. This was greatly appreciated.

Leitrim Sports Partnership Awards: A reminder that Eamonn McGowan receives his Hall of Fame Award this weekend and a large number of club members are attending to support. Anyone interested in coming along should contact any club officer immediately. Ann Flood has been nominated for the Club Volunteer of the Year Category, St. Patrick’s National School in the Best School’s Section and Martin Raftery along with Jamie Murray in the Men’s Team of the Year Category with all these results announced at the ceremony in Lough Rynn this Saturday December 3rd

AGM: The AGM takes place on Sunday December 4th in the Clubhouse at 2pm sharp. Please make a special effort to attend and any new members would be most welcome.

Lotto: There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week & the numbers drawn were 02-17-23-24. The €20 winners were Shane O’Neill, Aughacashel, Sean Lynch, Drumgorman, Brian Beirne, Dristernan, Barbara Keane & Rosalie Logan, Margaret McKeon, Ballinamore. The jackpot now stands at €6,000.
